Safeguarding standards

BKF applies a zero-tolerance approach to abuse, exploitation, harassment, discrimination and unsafe conduct involving children or vulnerable people.

• Treat every child with dignity and without discrimination.
• Avoid unsupervised one-to-one situations where reasonably possible.
• Never request unnecessary personal information or private contact with a child.
• Do not use humiliating, sexualised, threatening or exploitative language or imagery.
• Report concerns promptly; do not investigate allegations independently.
• Use suitable screening, supervision and role-specific orientation where an activity requires it.
• Contact emergency or statutory services where immediate safety is at risk.

Volunteer code of conduct

Volunteers, interns and event participants are expected to protect community dignity and the integrity of the Foundation.

• Follow the approved activity plan and coordinator instructions.
• Maintain respectful boundaries and confidentiality.
• Do not promise money, services, jobs, certificates or outcomes without authorization.
• Do not collect donations or beneficiary data through personal channels.
• Do not publish community photographs or stories without the required consent.
• Declare conflicts of interest and never misuse BKF's name, identity or resources.
• Report incidents, unsafe behaviour and suspected misconduct promptly.

Serious or repeated breaches may result in removal from an activity or volunteer role and referral to an appropriate authority where required.

Consent and dignity process

• Explain the intended use of a photograph, video, testimonial or story in understandable language.
• Seek informed consent from the adult concerned or a parent/legal guardian for a child.
• Do not make aid or participation conditional on providing media consent.
• Use minimal identifying information and avoid publishing sensitive personal details or precise child locations.
• Choose respectful images that do not stigmatise, humiliate or exploit hardship.
• Record consent and honour reasonable requests to stop future use, while explaining that completed print distribution or third-party resharing may not be fully reversible.

How collaborations are described

Institution names may be used to identify a documented event, drive, contribution or community activity in which their students, staff, representatives or teams participated.

A historical collaboration does not automatically mean endorsement, sponsorship, a continuing partnership or permission to use an institution's trademarks. BKF will use “official partner” only when an active relationship and permission are documented.
